This popular stairs plastic moulded Braille and tactile sign is adhesive backed for easy installation.

The sign’s benefits to the partially sighted are:

  • It has a white text on a dark blue background. Under test conditions this is believed to offer the very best colour contrast for those with any sort of vision impairment.
  • It utilises English Braille, the most recognised and used Braille variant in the UK
  • Its tactile letters and image are raised to ensure, regardless of whether the user can read Braille, that he or she still understands the message relayed

Sign Style
SSP’s range of braille and tactile signs meets all of the recommendations of both the RNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind People) and the NCIS (The national sight loss agency). Both these organisations state that signs should be constructed in the following method:

  • Sign lettering should use upper and lower case letters, as words retain a shape for easy reading
  • Signs should be embossed, not engraved
  • The surface of the sign should have a matt finish to reduce reflection and glare

The NCIS (Working for People with Sight Loss) goes on to say that whilst black on white or white on black are good contrasting colours sometimes, however,  these colours give too much reflection. More muted colours can improve visibility, for example navy background with cream or white text

Positioning
If a wall-mounted sign has raised letters or Braille that are to be felt, the tactile letters should be placed at a height of 1400–1700mm above floor level. The letters should be raised 1.5mm and the edges of the raised characters should be slightly rounded.
